Jazz fest feeling the pinch

The organiser of this weekend's Tauranga National Jazz Festival says the event will face new challenges this year.

Festival director Arne Herrmann says the country is still feeling the affects of the Christchurch earthquake and rising commodity prices such as fuel are impacting on discretionary budgets.

'There's quite a bit of a different mind set of what you want to do with your discretionary income.”

The Strand was busy at the 2010 Downtown Carnival during the National Jazz Fest.

But Arne says the festival does offer value for money.

'We have a huge community element in the festival. The Downtown Carnival and the TV3 Jazz Village, those are either free or accessible with a small entrance fee.

'I think those figures will go up – I think people will choose that as their preferred entertainment option.”

The preparations for the festival are almost complete, with only a few last minute details to finalise.

'There's a few minor things to sort out like signage, last minute marketing and publicity, artists that have to be picked up from airports.”

About 60,000 people are expected to attend this year's festival.

Several thousand tickets have been sold so far, but Arne expects 50 per cent of tickets to be sold this week and during the event.

'It always makes you wonder if it's going to happen in the last week or not.”

Yes and then there is the weather!...Just looking at this pic and wondering how many people would be in the streets if it was pouring down. You guys have been extremely lucky since you changed the format and took the performers out of the pubs.....I have everything crossed for fine weather. So Much excellent Music to listen to.

The Weather is going to be perfect, and if you have not ever attended, this is the most amazing weekend in Tauranga ever. See you there

I hope all your indoor sales go well....will hopefully make up for the losses, for which I presume, the rate payers pick up the tab?

It's a shame that like a number of people who write letters of gloom Helen thinks the Jazz Festival is propped up by the ratepayers. Having been involved in the past as one of the organising committee i would be surprised if this year's event is underwritten by TCC. It's sad that Helen can't just enjoy what is one of our beautiful city's best events without the recurring negative thoughts about financial mismanagement which she has no doubt learnt second hand. Have a great Easter weekend.

Do TCC underwrite this event

They have priced it off the market in the name of commercialism.I have no idea who picks up the losses if any.The Jazz Festival has lost the feeling and attraction it once had the organizers must face up to that.If it fails it is on their heads
