Kestrel interest from afar

Interest in the Kestrel, the former Auckland ferry for sale on the Tauranga waterfront, has come from as far away as Whangarei.
Kestrel watchers say a group of people from Whangarei recently inspected the 105 year old wooden hulled ferry, with a view to towing her north to a new home.
Owner Mark Scapens put the Kestrel up for sale because he's running out of options as Tauranga City Council will not grant an extension on the lease for its berth.

The Kestrel listing on TradeMe has drawn more than 6500 page views.

The current lease expires in 2014, but TCC will not consider negotiating an extension until closer to the expiry date.
The uncertain future means no-one will take her on because there is no time to recoup the investment required for a fit out.
The Kestrel is advertised at TradeMe and on Friday had received more than 6500 hits, since listing on May 11.
Mark has gone sailing for the winter and could not be contacted for comment, but Sharon Sutherland at The Big Fish Group says there's been significant interest.
"I've shown a few people around," says Sharon.
She says some are interested in buying only the Kestrel, or just the pontoon, and some are interested in both.

The Kestrel is a lovely feature to our waterfront , Ive taken overseas guests down there and theyve been in mpressed . To loose it due to the TCC inflexability would be wrong
