While more school kids use the bus, up 56 per cent this year, adults seem to prefer the car as their patronage of the local bus system has dropped a tad, 1 per cent.
Welcome Bay has an extra bus running at least for a while during school terms on weekdays.
SunLive went out into the streets to find out what you think of public transport and whether a better bus service would entice you to use it in order to ease congestion.

Let's face facts..... New Zealanders are lazy! As I heard one bus driver comment "They would park IN the shop if they could!" Add the fact that public transport takes more effort and is slower than travelling by car (There is only one bus lane in the city and motorists WILL NOT give way to a Bus) then you have the answer. Ratepayers are funding a totally inefficient, loss making system that is frequented by drunks, the elderly and schoolchildren, but is mostly under utilised for the majority of the day. Word is that they want to increase the bus service later into the night, to encourage more disruptive passengers to use the bus (Who will be cleaning the vomit?)

You must equally adopt a service that is efficient , see for example the buses on route 70 that are tradionally over 70% unoccupied. A review of the service is overdue along with affordability and practacicality. Adopt a system such as in Queensland for example where you can board a bus anywhere so long as it is on the blue road side line no need for a designated pick up drop off point. Review your patronage and peak services to make a more viable service for all to use confidently. Blue line indicates bus route so very simple to use for all local and visitor.

I have never seen the transport system in Queensland and maybe shouldn't comment, However< I have heard that motorists will/must give way to a bus that is indicating to enter the flow of traffic. I am also aware that there are systems in other countries that activate the traffic lights to turn green as a bus approaches. This tends to result in other road users being more than happy to Follow a bus, as it will speed up their journey time. The difference being that other transport systems have some thought put into them and are not just established and expected to work properly and efficiently. Wouldn't you expect the "watermelons" to be beating their drums about efficient transport rather that big business and banking?????
