The Kestrel, the former Tauranga floating restaurant and Auckland ferry is for sale on TradeMe – though not by auction.
The 105 year old wooden ferry is in the commercial property section of the website with price by negotiation and in-person viewings by appointment.
The Kestrel's future is uncertain as it becomes listed on TradeMe.
The 39m long Kestrel arrived in Tauranga in 2004 and was refitted as a floating restaurant, although it has been vacant since the last tenant moved out in 2008.
Owner Mark Scapens leases the site where the boat is berthed, but that expires in 2014 and the boat must leave Tauranga as it requires maintenance that cannot be performed there.
'There is no longer a slip in Tauranga to provide the ongoing hull maintenance that a timber ferry like this requires,” says Mark.
'Because the Kestrel's engine was decommissioned as part of her placement on The Strand waterfront, she will need to be towed to another port for maintenance.
'Auckland is now the nearest slip that can maintain a vessel the size of the Kestrel.”
Mark says he wants to do the best by the Kestrel as she is an important part of New Zealand's ferry history.
'She's a wonderful vessel and this sale will be a great opportunity for someone else to add to her long and colourful history.
'Hopefully by listing the Kestrel for sale on TradeMe we will be able to find a practical solution and give her a gracious exit and open exciting new doors.
'She could remain a floating restaurant or be transformed into a creative and eye-catching office space.
'She just needs someone with a great vision who can see her fantastic potential.”
Earlier this month, Mark said if a new home can't be found he will consider demolition options.
On May 1 he confirmed he's asked Environment BOP about the possibility of burning Kestrel to the waterline and sinking the remainder.
'That's about plan C. I'm between a rock and a hard place and it's time to move on – one way or another.”
