The games will feature more than 100 athletes competing across 19 sports including athletics, blind cricket, rowing, boccia, goalball and wheelchair basketball.

The foundation needs volunteers for one or all of the three days to help assist with sports events along with co-ordinating the athletes, teams and accommodation.

'Volunteering at the games is a great opportunity to support physically disabled young people to participate in a range of sports, give back to the community and enjoy the fun of the event,” says foundation spokesperson Grace Shaw.

Founded by Sir Murray Halberg in 1963, the charitable foundation operates on the belief that all Kiwis should have access to sports with no exceptions.

Along with providing grants sports equipment the foundation employs hundreds of disability sport advisers who connect physically disabled people to sport and recreation opportunities in schools, clubs and in their communities.

The Halberg Junior Disability Games takes place at St Peter's School in Cambridge from Friday, April 22 to Sunday, April 24.
