Cricket's Hawke Cup now belongs to Bay of Plenty, at least in part thanks to a century by Ben Musgrove on the final day of the three-day match at Nelson Park in Napier on the weekend.
The Bay of Plenty senior representative team defeated cup holders Hawke's Bay by six wickets.
Bay of Plenty got stuck in from the start, winning the toss and electing to bowl on Friday in the NZ Cricket Minor Association season title decider and were quickly into their stride, dismissing the Hawke Bay opening pair with just 20 runs on the board.
The Bay of Plenty bowlers grabbed regular wickets from there on and at six down at the 103 run mark, the Cup holders were in real trouble.
Indika Senarathne (33) GS Pretorious (32) batting at five and seven respectably, dug Hawke's Bay out of a deep hole, but the Bay of Plenty bowling attack kept up the pressure to remove Hawke's Bay for 162, with the first ball of the 44th over.
Northern Knight spinner Jono Boult dealt the Hawke's Bay middle and lower order a big blow, grabbing three wickets at a cost of just five runs, in his five over spell. Brett Hampton and Tommy Clout also bowled with genuine enthusiasm to be rewarded with three bowling scalps apiece.
The Hawke's Bay bowlers wasted little time in making inroads into the Bay of Plenty batting attack and at stumps on day one, the visitors were in danger of conceding first innings points at 115/5.
The arrival of long-time Bay of Plenty all-rounder Jono Boult at the crease was the turning point in the match. Boult, who batted for just under five hours, patiently worked his way to 94 before being dismissed.
Boult's hard fought innings, took his Bay of Plenty runs past the two thousand run mark to 2002.
Campbell Thomas better known as a bowler, posted 45 runs batting at nine, while opener Tom MacRury reached 40 before being dismissed.
Keeper Tim Clarke took his season total to just shy of three hundred runs with a gritty 26, as the Bay side were bowled out for 318 late on day two.
Hawke's Bay resumed their second turn at bat at 84/2 on day three and went on the attack.
Led by New Zealand Under 19 batsmen Graeme Tryon, who blazed away to smash 143 off 159 balls, Hawke's Bay declared in their second turn at bat at 361/5, to set Bay of Plenty a target of 205 for outright victory.
The visitors lost two cheap wickets to be 2/17, with the third wicket falling at the 55 run mark.
Batting at four, Ben Musgrave took Bay of Plenty to victory with a commanding knock before he was caught behind for 102.
Musgrave was posting his maiden Bay of Plenty century, with his innings containing fifteen boundaries.
A 148 run partnership between Musgrave and Northern Knight master blaster Brett Hampton, who was there at the end with an unbeaten 63, gave Bay of Plenty the symbol of New Zealand Cricket Minor Association supremacy prize by six wickets. The Hawke Cup will now spend the winter at Bay of Plenty Cricket headquarters at the Bay Oval at Mount Maunganui, before Bay of Plenty defends the NZ Cricket prize in January 2017.
