Rain making its way up the country

The MetService is predicting a week of wind, rain and cooler temperatures for the country, and the weather in the Bay of Plenty will be no exception.

A front moving up the country on Tuesday will bring periods of rain and a cold southerly change for many.

For example, the maximum temperature for Christchurch is expected to drop from 22 degrees on Tuesday to 14 degrees on Wednesday.

On Monday a trough over the central North Island brings a few showers to central areas, while an approaching front in the south brings rain to the West Coast, and southeastern areas later, says meteorologist Ciaran Doolin.

On Tuesday the front progresses up the South Island, stalling over the centre of the country at night.

Periods of rain are expected in most places in the South Island, especially the West Coast where briefly heavy falls are possible.

'A cold southerly will follow this front, dropping maximum temperatures down into the mid-teens.”

Temperatures in the Bay of Plenty will be around the mid-20s, according to the MetService's five day forecast.

On Wednesday the stalled front brings rain or showers to central North Island and northern South Island areas, while the rest of the country should be mainly fine.

Then on Thursday this front weakens as a ridge of high pressure builds bringing fine weather to most of the country, which persists into early Friday.
