Domain to host Steamers games

The Bay of Plenty Steamers are heading back to the Tauranga Domain to open their 2016 Mitre 10 Cup campaign against Taranaki on August 20.

This will be the first of two matches hosted at the Tauranga Domain, with the Steamers hosting Otago on Sunday 4 September at 2.35pm in week three.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union CEO Mike Rogers says they wanted to continue to recreate this unique experience for supporters.

"We also learnt a lot from last year's game and I am sure our supporters will be pleased with the developments we will make, especially in terms of reducing the costs to supporters that wish to attend the games”.

'It is important for us as a Union to ensure we are living our strategic plan and that is ensuring we are supporting the future of this city."

Mike says by hosting matches at the Tauranga Domain they can demonstrate what the right facility can achieve, generate a great experience for supporters, and create opportunities for businesses within the community.

"We have some great facilities within Tauranga that have already demonstrated this, take the Bay Oval and ASB Baypark Stadium," says Mike.

The Steamers will play two pre-season games leading up to their 2016 Mitre 10 Cup campaign.

The first pre-season match will be against Northland at Rugby Park, Whakatane on Friday 5th August, while the Steamers will be hosted by Auckland on Friday 12th August in their final pre-season clash.

Not bad for the biggest city in the region and 5th biggest in NZ with its own spot on the weather map, the rugby w viewing facilities are 3rd world, Ekatahuna has better, when will Councils realise that no matter what the entertainment "gurus" think, rugby is still by far the biggest crowd puller and revenue earner, and the public deserve something a little better than a stock car track or something left over from the 60s, I would as a ratepayer much rather put money towards a multi purpose facility at the domain to benefit the city, rather than a waterfront that does not know what it is!!, and BOP rugby wonder why their revenue keeps dropping, rugby is our national sport so has a head start on the fight for the entertainment dollar, I travel to watch my rugby.
