Element IMF Cadets, cruised to victory against defending Baywide T20 champions Bayleys Central, in the 2016 title decider at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui on Saturday.
Element IMF Cadets won the T20.
The Western Bay team won their first Baywide silverware since they annexed the Baywide Cup in 2011 - without tasting defeat in the smash and bash competition.
Central batted first in the Baywide T20 Grand Final and were restricted to 104/8 as they lost regular wickets during their twenty overs. English visitor Ryan Pedley held the Central innings together to top score with 33 runs. Ben Christensen was the best of the Cadets bowlers grabbing three wickets with James Birchall taking two wickets.
Cadets took control from the start of their turn at bat and were easily in front of the required run rate from the first couple of overs. Cadets all-rounder Donavan Deeble set up the victory with a quick fire 44, with Cadets skipper Scott Steward posting an unbeaten 35. The Western Bay of Plenty's team victory came in the 11th over with eight wickets to spare.
The final qualifying round, in early afternoon play, preceded the T20 title decider. Cadets finished top of the preliminary competition when they put New World Te Puke to the sword in round seven. Batting first Cadets retired two players on their way to posting 181 for the loss of one wicket. Donavan Deeble retired at 53 with Morton Freer reaching the same mark. Five wickets from Lou Brook led the way as Cadets removed Te Puke for 96.
Central had a real battle with fellow Rotorua team Bay of Plenty Indians, before they confirmed their finals berth. Central reached 123/8 with Graeme Whiles top scoring with 38 runs. GS Gargan and LS Bhatti took four wickets apiece for the Indian side. The match went down to the wire, with Bay of Plenty Indians needing ten runs in the last over, to deny Central a berth in the final. Line and length bowing at the death allowed Indians just four runs which gave Central a place in the final.
