Warm weather on its way

Warm, wet and windy – that's the outlook for the North Island this week, as an area of low pressure is expect to upset the summer sunshine scheduled for Monday to Thursday.

Despite today's dismal start to February, with drizzle and high cloud staying put for most of the day, an area of high pressure will remain over the country for the next few days, resulting in blue skies and warm temperatures.

'Parts of the lower North Island are likely to get into the thirties on Wednesday, including suburbs of Wellington,” commented meteorologist Emma Blades.

An area of low pressure looks likely to bring warm, humid air from the across the Tasman Sea to the North Island on Friday.

There is the potential for this system to generate strong northeasterlies and heavy falls for the northeast of the North Island. The heavier, more persistent rain is expected about northern and eastern areas, with a moderate risk of rainfall accumulations approaching warning criteria about Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay during Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, a front gradually moves up the South Island on Thursday and Friday bringing rain to the west.
