Large swells a 'spectacular' sight

The swell from Tropical Cyclone Victor is expected to peak along the Mount Mauganui beaches today.

Bay Explorer skipper Brandon Stone says the four metre swells they encountered as they went out the entrance this morning were spectacular.

Large swells have been seen in the Tauranga Harbour entrance.

'Totally awesome, no wind so it's really clean, but it was massive on the entrance for sure. It's huge around there,' says Brandon.

'When the tide changes with the outgoing tide, it's going to get bigger. When they tide goes against the swell it's going to climb up another metre.”

He didn't see anyone surfing the entrance, and considers Matakana Island surf will be a tow-in today.

'To be honest it's pretty big. You would have to be a really skilled surfer,' he says of the entrance surf.

'We were climbing over swells a good four metres out by A Beacon.”

Outside sea conditions are dead flat calm, says Brandon.

'We've just had a marlin next to the boat actually, with a school of fish.

'We're heading over to Okaparu reef now try and get some pictures of the reef breaking. We were out there yesterday and there were just amazing holes getting drilled into the ocean. Could have driven my whole boat in there and you wouldn't see the roof.”

Okaparu Reef is a few kilometres west of Motiti and is normally several meters below sea level.
