Material washes up at Omanu

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is asking for anyone who has seen any material wash ashore at Omanu, or further afield, to contact them.

Tauranga City Council notified their regional counterpart yesterday of a large piece of geotextile material that had washed up at Omanu.

A recovery team spent four hours moving the material away from the tide line.

"We spent four hours yesterday moving it up towards the dune away from tide line using two 4WDs with winches and two tractors, what a mission, definitely not carpet," says Chris Toner, one of the members of the recovery team.

Regional Council Pollution Prevention staff are currently assessing the material to identify if it's part of the artificial Mount surf reef, says a statement from the council.

'If confirmed, further assessment of the current condition of the surf reef will take place.”

The regional council would like to hear from anyone who has observed any of this material on the shore.

To report these sightings please call the pollution hotline on 0800 884 883.

This is not the first time that geotextile material has been discovered in Mount Maunganui.

In May last year, Bay of Plenty snorkeler Ryan Belworthy captured video footage of a large piece of carpet on the reef off Mount Maunganui's Rabbit Island.

The week after Ryan's discovery, the regional council confirmed the carpet had indeed come from the artificial surf reef.

No need to waste time and money 'assessing' its origin. You were told 6mths ago that the decommissioning of the artificial reef was a dodgy job that cost somewhere in the region of $60 or $80k. All that contractor did was cut open the geotextile units to let the sand out and left the material in situ. When the offer of providing underwater footage of the mess was made, it was rejected. What a pathetic outfit you've become BOPRC. Get your act together.
