A mystery fish-like creature with legs has popped up on Te Papa Museum's Facebook page.

Images of the black creature was reportedly sent to the museum by Claudia Howse, Glenys Howse and James Beuvink for identification.

This image was posted on the Te Papa Museum Facebook page. Do you know what it is? Photos: Facebook.

The yet unidentified species was found in the shallow waters in the Bay of Islands in Northland and didn't survive when caught.

Te Papa Museum says the 'weird creature is likely to be a species of frogfish”.

'But we won't know more until we have a chance to examine it closely.

'Frogfishes have the fastest bite of any vertebrate. Their mouths expand at the speed approaching a .22 rifle bullet - and that's in a medium 800x denser than air.”

Do you know what this creature is?

Whatever it is, give it a driving licence. Can't be any worse than other species found here.
