Bay of Plenty have finished in the top four at this year's Bayleys National Sevens.

The championship crown went to Counties Manukau in the men's division.

The women's division was won by Manawatu, who beat Wellington 26-19.

Counties men's team had too much class in the men's final beating North Harbour 54-14. It was that class which eliminated Bay of Plenty in their semi-final encounter as the home side went down 31-10.

It was a stark contrast from the Bay's quarter-final match against Taranaki where the blue and gold managed a Houdini-like performance to snatch an incredible 27-26 win on the stroke of full time.

Attention now turns to international sevens, with the likely appearance of Sonny Bill Williams for the All Blacks Sevens in Wellington.

Sir Gordon Tietjens is hailing SBW's sevens prowess after a handful of trainings with the national side.

The coach has all but confirmed the World Cup-winning All Black will make his debut in the Wellington leg of the World Series.

He says he [Sonny] adds a completely new dimension.

"Yeah, he's got the off-load, but he is very, very good in contact. We had a contact session the other day...and I've never seen a guy move bodies like he can."

The tournament will be held at the Cake Tin in Wellington on Saturday and Sunday January 30-31.
