Steamers player Matt Axtens will captain this year's Bay of Plenty's Papamoa Beach Tavern Sevens team at this weekend's Bayleys National Sevens tournament in Rotorua.

Coach Peter Woods has named a strong line-up for the two day tournament which kicks off at the Rotorua International Stadium on Saturday.

The squad features All Blacks Sevens squad players Teddy Stanaway and Isaac Te Aute.

The Bay side includes a number of talented prospects including 18-year-old Masiu Vainikolo and the talented Mason Walker.

It's also largely unchanged from last weekend's Bay of Plenty Provincial Sevens Tournament, where the team reached the Championship semi-final, but were knocked out by an inform Northland side.

This weekend Zar Lawrence and Courtney Mita will re-join the 12 man squad for this weekend's tournament.

Peter says there was plenty of experience within the squad.

"We have some experienced players back into the fold. This will no doubt lift the team following last weekend's performance. The squad are all excited about this weekend and are looking forward to putting in a good performance."

Bay of Plenty has been placed in Pool A with Auckland, Northland and South Canterbury.
