Cricketing fans all over the world have marveled at the astonishing batting record of 1009 not out, set by Indian schoolboy Pranav Dhanawade on Tuesday. But it was only five years ago the Bay of Plenty Indians set a record of their own they would rather forget.
In 2010, playing in their first season of Baywide premier competition against Central at Boord Park, the side was skittled for 14. Yes for those of you who don't remember it and think this is a typo. The Indians were bowled out for just 14 runs.
It was no laughing matter at the time, well not for the Indians playing. In fact the team captain at the time Sanjay Unka was quoted as saying; "Mate, we're deeply embarrassed and it's no good at all. "We never expected to win many games but our aim this season was to build and take a step forward for every game. "Saturday took us quite a few steps back."
For the record eight ducks were recorded among the 10 wickets to fall, with the Indians four wickets down without a run in the scorebook after the first over and six down for three a few overs later. Unsurprisingly it was and still is the lowest team total recorded in Williams Cup match.
At the time it left the Indians hanging their heads in embarrassment and Bay of Plenty Cricket second-guessing their decision to admit the side into their premier club competition. The team stayed in the competition and it would be a few seasons before they would register their first win. But that's another story.
The side has had its successes, one of Bay of Plenty's most exciting batsman has played for them. No not Kane Williamson but Bharat Popli.
Although Bharat is a masterful batsman who has set his own batting records in the region. Even his feats pale in comparison to Maharashtra schoolboy Pranav Dhanawade who rewrote the record books on Tuesday, hammering an epic 1009 not out in an inter-school cricket tournament to register the highest individual score in an innings in any form of the game.
The 15-year-old smashed 129 fours and clobbered 59 sixes in his staggering 323-ball knock played over two days, before his team, KC Gandhi School, declared their innings on a staggering 1465-2.
Earlier, the opposition, Arya Gurukul School, had been bowled for just 31. They were dismissed for 72 in their second turn at bat, giving Dhanawade's team victory by an innings and 1382 runs.
But hey, that is what's so beautiful about sports. There are a lot of highs and equally a lot of lows.
