Sisters success in the pool

Olive and Lily Pearce certainly have caused more than a ripple in the Bay of Plenty swimming scene since moving from Wellington to Tauranga.

The sisters represented the Bay of Plenty at the New Zealand Junior Swimming Championships in Wellington last February, after joining Otumoetai Swimming Club three weeks prior.

For 12-year-old Olive, it was her third New Zealand Juniors event but for Lily, 10, it was her first.

The girls recently competed in Swimming Bay of Plenty Junior Swimming Championships in Rotorua in December. Both had an outstanding meet.

Olive won the trophy for Swimming Bay of Plenty best junior performance, Summer Championships this was ranked on the closest performance to the current world record.

She also was the female backstroke champion of the meet winning the 50m, 100m and 200m races.

Her medal tally is an impressive six gold, four silver and two bronze medals. She medalled in all 12 races she swam.

Lily's tally isn't bad either winning four gold, three silver and three bronze.

It's been a busy 2015 for both girls who also joined the Mount Surf Club in January last year and recently competed in the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Pool Championships in. It was the first time both girls had been involved in Pool Champs, and Olive won a gold medal in the 50m swim with fins and silver medal in Under-14 patient tow.

Lily won a silver medal in the 4 x 50m medley relay, a silver medal in the 4 x 50m obstacle relay, bronze medal 50m with fins and bronze medal 50m rescue medley - helping their club to take-out overall winners.

But Olive's talents don't just end at the pool, she also has a bright future in ballet. Olive has just been accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance Junior Associates programme for 2016, after an audition process.

This ballet programme where associates travel from throughout the country to the New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington for four weekends of tuition a year. The Associates Programme identifies ballet and contemporary dance students who have the talent for a career in dance performance.

Olive has also been part of the International Training Programme with the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne in 2015, after auditioning and has been offered a further place for 2016.

'The weeks are very tiring and I don't think my swim coach knows I dance 10 hours a week,” she says, 'and my dance teacher doesn't know I swim 10 hours a week. Plus all the other sports I do.”
