Tauranga's Under-14 Water Polo team created history over the weekend by winning their first Division One National Championship title.

The Bay of Plenty side were too strong for the competition, beating North Harbour 7-4 in the final in Wellington.

It's the first time the side has one gold at the tournament.

Tauranga were still buzzing from their penalty shootout semi-final win against Marist when they took on North Harbour in the final.

Loui Schuler was the first to score, followed by Marshall Baker to hand Tauranga an early 2-0 lead.

However, Daniel Harris pegged one back for North Harbour to make it 2-1 going into the break.

An up-and-down second quarter then saw Tauranga restore their two-goal advantage with a shot from Noah Van Oudenaaren.

The crowd was then left stunned when Tauranga goalkeeper Bae Fountain received a pass from the swim-off, approached halfway, and launched a huge bounce shot into the back of the net for a goal at a distance of at least 18m and a three-goal lead.

North Harbour's Dominic Chen was left alone in front of goal in the next possession after an exclusion and put one away to make it 4-2.

But an unorthodox backhand from Tauranga's Kiahi Horan skipped past the arms of North Harbour's James Tyras.

Daniel Harris converted for North Harbour to bring the gap to two, but Tauranga moved the ball inside and threw a high pass that was tapped into the back of the net by Tom Wilson for 6-3.

Harris then scored a penalty which saw North Harbour trail by two with a quarter left to play. However, three exclusions went unscored early on, as the two sides gave it their all in the last few minutes.

Loui Schuler then scored his second of the match and sealed the deal for Tauranga, who ran out 7-4 winners at full-time.

Bae Fountain was named most valuable player and Loui Schuler was named in the Tournament Team.

In the girls' division, Tauranga finished a credible fifth with Ella Pollock also named in the Tournament Team.
