The construction of a $400 million wind farm could be announced early next year by the board of Tauranga based company TrustPower.
But TrustPower spokesperson Graeme Purches is urging people not to read too much into the potential wind farm project, which will be located at Mahinerangi near Dunedin.
'All we have said is that things are starting to gel and the board may tick it off in the new year,” says Graeme.
If the proposed wind farm is approved, it will be 25 per cent bigger than TrustPower's only existing wind farm at Tararua.
Graeme says the project is starting to look more positive as New Zealand's exchange rate makes the purchase of overseas wind turbines more affordable.
'We can get more for our money and because of the economic downturn, manufacturers are better placed to supply turbines,” says Graeme.
If approved, the wind farm will be built in stages and the first stage could involve erecting between 10 and 15 turbines capable of producing about 30 megawatts.
The proposed wind farm would be located near the existing 84 mega watt, four station hydro dam at Lake Mahinerangi.
