Weekend shoppers and ‘brunchers' will save some dollars for the rest of September when they head into Tauranga's central business district, after Tauranga City Council agreed to make car parking buildings free on Saturdays for the rest of the month.
This move comes after successful negotiations with council by Mainstreet Tauranga.
Mainstreet's Kirby Weiss says this concession is a great help for the central city.
'It's not a hand out, but a hand up for businesses to make sure the central city economy remains strong.”
While the free parking on Saturday will last just for September, Kirby is hopeful it will return again at Christmas time as it has done in recent years.
Kirby says council is working well with his organisation and their decision to put the construction of a new car parking building back into the city's planning process is encouraging for CBD businesses.
This is a long term issue though and in the meantime Kirby is very happy with the latest decision.
'We're still working through the long term issues but this will greatly help out businesses in the short term.”
