Valley Rd: drivers told to slow down

Valley Road residents annoyed by the impact Hopper buses have on their street are about to get some relief says BOP Regional Councillor Doug Owen.

'Immediately we are going to talk to Hoppers about slowing the buses down as they drive down Valley Road, and to ensure that the drivers have the right attitude when driving down that street,” says Doug.

Regional councillor Doug Owens recognises the danger of having many buses use Valley Road.

'The people of Valley Road are frustrated, and we recognise this.

'We will also see whether the Tauranga City Council can come up with some solutions that meets everyone's needs.”

Since Bay Hopper Buses re-jigged its services in July 2009, the formerly quiet Valley Road between Tweed Street and Golf Road has become part of bus routes 1, 2 and 30.

Valley Road resident Lloyd Downs counted 130 buses per day, Monday to Friday and 60 a day on weekends.

There are about 750 buses a week using a street with a narrow carriageway, says Doug.

'With cars parked on both sides, there is a maximum of 40cm on each side of the bus,” says Doug.

'It's a recipe for a disaster. It is my personal view, and I'm agreeing with the residents.”

Options for the future of the Valley Road buses were discussed at a meeting yesterday. As well as telling the buses to slow down for now, Doug says the regional council is also going to talk to the city council about a series of new bus stops and possibly a new cycle track – but not on Valley Road.

'We are looking at ways to take the pressure off Valley Road,” says Doug.

'We are looking at everything from express buses to alternate streets.”

Valley Rd bus use

Prior to the 1989 LG reform, the (old) Mt Borough changed the configuration of Valley Rd by reducing the width of the road and installing speed humps. This was to discourage the use of this road by heavy traffic and general through traffic and make them use Maunganui Rd and Oceanbeach Rd. It is a 'no brainer' to now allow buses back through this road. Encourage passengers to walk a bit further (and exercise at the same time) to catch a bus. Perhaps it may help if the Regional Council and TCC discussed this BEFORE the bus route was finalised and not wait until the damage was done.

Valley Road it's a no brainer

Surely the bus routes should concentrate on Marine Parade/Oceanbeach Rd. on one side and Maunganui Rd onthe other and then those in the middle who wanted to catch a bus could walk a short distance through to catch it ? For the numbers that catch buses it would not be an issue anyway. But narrow gutted Valley Road I don't think so.

slow down too

Its crazy that the buses are on anything other than a main road. the middle roads are far to narrow.... but they're not the only ones who need to slow down.... everyone should as there's so many kids around this area! Ive seen so many close calls...its only time until someone's really hurt again!

Would be interesting to count the passengers, unlikely to get to 750 in a week.

Stop moaning i have to walk over 1klm to get a bus and i live in Tauranga. I think there is a bit of snobbery coming in here and as for the amount of people on the buses that is immaterial as the Hopper have a contract price and that's that, which also goes for the size of bus.

Whinge Whinge Whinge!

The bus route has gone down Valley Road for years; I used to travel on it back in 2003/4. In fact it used to travel further along Valley road than it does now, down to Tay Street. I believe Valley Road has been used because it's a central block so people don't have to walk as far to a bus stop. Additionally the majority of the buses run during working hours so I suspect this really is a minority having a whinge because they have nothing better to do! Has more of the street been surveyed to find out whether there really is such a big problem?

It is tight there

I have to say that it can at times get rather tight there even for me as I collect kerbside rubbish every week,so far a bus has only clipped my right mirror, this is just an indication of how tight things can be, but I have always wondered why are there some many buses going through Vally road,Just one of the reasons why I do my best to clean up and get out!! far to much heavy traffic, including my truck, School kids walking to School are always my major concerns on Vally Road.

maybe Ann would like to come live at my house and have a sleepin after a busy working week on a saturday or sunday, the buses start before eight at the weekends and not just one, they go past in threes, its like living on state highway no 1, during the week they start before seven and are still going after 9pm.Or maybe she would like to pay for the damage being caused to my property dur to constant heavy traffic on a surface not designed for it

ann may also like to think back to the size of bus she travelled on... oh yes the little bay hoppers that we all loved not huge powerful noisy buses that we now have

Accident only matter of time!

Maybe before Ann accuses the massive number of Valley Rd residents of "whinging"about the hundreds of buses ripping down our residential street, she should get her facts right. It is only a matter of time on this narrow street before amother child gets killed, like outside Mt College. Sincerely, Mother of 4 with "nothing better to do but whinge"......yeah right!

Use it or Lose it!

No wonder we have a problem with obesity!!! Walking another couple of hundred meters to a bus stop that's not on Valley Rd might be a little inconvenient fir the 3-4 passengers using the huge buses. For goodness sake even my 88 year old Grandfather with a walking frame could do that and would probably be encouraged too by his G.P!!!

counted the buses

Seriously Lloyd you counted the buses going by, maybe you need either a job or a better hobby. Or you could join the new bowling club.

Think of the rate paying home owners....

Posted on 02-03-2011 15:43 | By EJM

especially those who have had the walls of their homes cracked buy the excessive number of buses going over the speed humps. Who is going to pay for that repair work?

Use main roads

This narrow gutted quiet residential street is not suitable for heavy bus traffic at the rate of 100 every day.Sheer stupidity because it can't be more than a 400m walk usually less in either direction to Marine Parade or Maunganui Road. Pure and simple.
