Back by popular demand, the internationally-acclaimed film Girl Rising is returning to Tauranga for two final screenings this month.

Hosted by the Cambodia Charitable Trust, the screenings will take place at Rialto Tauranga on Thursday, November 19, and Wednesday, November 25, before the film is returned to New York.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Richard E. Robbins, Girl Rising shares the inspirational stories of nine girls in developing countries whose lives are being transformed through education.

Founder Denise Arnold says the Cambodia Charitable Trust helps provide education to at-risk children in Cambodia, and adds that the three screenings in Tauranga earlier this year sold out quickly.

'The aim in bringing Girl Rising to New Zealand was to not only raise funds, but also to raise awareness of the need to educate girls in developing countries,” she explains.

'When families in Cambodia cannot afford to send their children to school, it is the girls that miss out first. Educating girls can help break the poverty cycle and transform lives.”

Girl Rising features the voices of renowned actors including Meryl Streep, Liam Neeson, Cate Blachett, and Anne Hathaway.

Starting in Cambodia, the film then moves to Haiti, Nepal, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Peru, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan, portraying the tremendous challenges and near-impossible odds the girls in these countries have overcome to pursue their dreams.

This year, Girl Rising has been screened throughout New Zealand and proven hugely successful, with more than 700 people attending screenings which have raised a total of $6,400 for the trust.

Hosted by the Cambodia Charitable Trust, Girl Rising screens at Rialto Tauranga on Thursday, November 19 at 6.30pm, then on Wednesday, November 25th at 5.45pm. Tickets cost $20.
