Title No.8 for Mount kite-boarder

Mount Maunganui kite-boarder Marc Jacobs has claimed his eighth consecutive national title at this year's New Zealand Kiteboard Nationals.

The event took place at the Manawatu Estuary – the largest estuary in the lower North Island – at the Foxton Beach river mouth.

Returning home from competing overseas, Marc took out the Open Men's Category in gusty and choppy conditions.

Marc says he was always confident of claiming his eighth title.

'I'm always very confident before the New Zealand Nationals,” he admits. 'I compete for a living and have much more experience.

'Foxton was one of the most challenging conditions I have had, so my tour experience helped out a lot.

'Also the wind was real gusty and the water extremely choppy. Luckily my new Legacy kite has a huge wind range, absorbs the gusts really well and I managed to stomp down my tricks.”

He says the conditions in Foxton made it a great challenge.

'Foxton is a very sick kiteboarding location. The first two days were a bit too light to run the event, but thanks to the river mouth current we could still have a bit of fun kiting in light conditions.

'The wind kicked in dramatically just for an hour – it went from 12 to 30-plus knots – so I had all my kite sizes pumped up and ready.”

The kite-boarder says his aim now is to claim 10 titles in a row.

'I know no Kiwi could beat that and I'll be forever remembered for it. The feeling is still the same, and this is why I love competing.”
