Golf: Top three finish for Bay

The Bay of Plenty have finished third behind Otago and North Harbour at this year's SBS Bank Golf Invitational.

And in one of the most dominant performances the tournament has ever seen, it was Otago who won the invitational.

The five-man Otago team of Duncan Croudis, Chris Snow, Brent McEwan, Nick Borren and Fraser MacLachlan were quite simply untouchable.

'We are so happy to get the win for our captain Brent McEwan, who is retiring from representative golf at the end of the year,” said an ecstatic Croudis.

Winning by a massive margin of 28 strokes at Invercargill Golf Club, this made the home run very enjoyable for the players, giving them the chance to take in the moment.

North Harbour snuck their way into second place as Bay of Plenty and Wellington faltered.

Wellington made it hard on themselves when sitting in second place with one round to go.

Team member and New Zealand Amateur Champion Daniel Hillier had to fly home to prepare for an NCEA exam, which heaped pressure on the four remaining players. They eventually finished in a tie for fourth.

However, nothing can be taken away from a stunning performance from Otago. They will start as favourites in two weeks at the Toro Interprovincial, which is to be played on the same course.

'It's been 35 years, but worth the wait!” said Otago team manager Bill Trewern.

'I'm so proud of all the lads, this is a great moment in my career.” remarked an excited Brent McEwan, number one for the Otago team.

Brent, a former New Zealand representative and long-time Otago number one, announced this was his last SBS Invitational at the prize giving. He is retiring to spend more time with his family.

However, before doing so, he has one more goal to achieve in leading his team to a Toro Interprovincial title.

Ryan Chisnall won by one shot over Vaughan MaCall in the individual ranks. Chisnall once again showed his consistency as he continues to build an impressive resume.

Individuals play for the Russell Haywood Memorial Trophy in this division and from day one, in tough conditions, Ryan had his eye on this early. The trophy has been passed around a few of New Zealand's best, including Gareth Paddison and Tim Wilkinson.

Vaughan was three shots back with four holes to play, but playing the front nine last he birdied the sixth, made par on the seventh then notched an eagle on the eighth.

All that was needed was a par on the par four ninth and he would have won the individual title on a countback, however a wayward tee shot proved costly.

The cream certainly came to the top on this demanding course. After Cryan and Vaughan came Lachie McDonald, Duncan Croudis and Jonathan Cane.

Duncan held a share of the lead after 36 holes and played solid golf over the weekend to be the backbone of Otago's historic win.

This was the 38th SBS Bank Invitational and in total, $270,000 has been raised for local charities.
