Victory rather than the spoils

Just like the All Blacks' outstanding victory over Australia in the Rugby World Cup final, our newsroom's 'Who will rule the Rugby World Cup?” competition had it all.

While the country nurses a collective hangover following the history-making win yesterday, our newsroom has become strangely quiet in the corner where my work colleague Zoe is sitting.

Like the Australians, Zoe now knows what the bitter pill of defeat tastes like.

Her Girls' Team of Olympian kayaker Luuka Jones and herself lost to the Boys' Team of Steamers coach Clayton McMillan and myself.

Both teams had to pick the winning margin between the All Blacks and Australia in yesterday's final.

Luuka choose a one point difference, I choose three points, Zoe choose four points and Clayton choose five. While in the end it was a resounding 34-17 victory, it meant Clayton won because he was the closest to the winning margin.

Like the All Blacks, Clayton and I are being humble about our victory, and we're not expecting a street parade in our honour.

And while I would have looked forward to the morning tea shout by the losing team, the Boys' Team have decided to take the high-ground and will not expect Zoe to fork out for morning tea.

I guess it's because she's sitting at her desk mumbling into her empty tea cup saying 'it's your fault magic tea leaves, you've let me down”.

I think like Sonny Bill Williams, who gave away his winning medal. It's not about the spoils of victory, it's the knowledge that the Boys' Team were victorious.

We never panicked despite the late but valiant rally from the Girls' Team, who staged a comeback after the pool matches to level the scores come finals time.

Zoe, your money is safe, just like the Webb Ellis Cup is in the hands of the All Blacks. Maybe in another four years you may want to have another go? But be aware my friend, the Boys' Team may not be so generous in 2019.

Actually this country, like most of the world, has a huge percentage who have no interest in this obscure sport.

Please remind us of the percentage of rugby enthusiasts in North & South America, Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Europe. Winning this farcically named "world" cup, means nothing to approx 99% of the planet. Time for the tumbleweeds to understand that before getting too carried away and inflicting more embarrassment upon NZ.
