Mount Maunganui surfer Kehu Butler is making serious waves on the national surfing scene after claiming his first Open Men's title.

He also claimed the title in the Under-20 Boys' Division to join Whangamata's Ella Williams, who also completed the double in the Open Women's and Under-20 Girls' Divisions.
Day two of the event saw a vast improvement in conditions, with a building 1.0m swell throughout the day and light onshore winds.
Kehu, who is only 15, posted a 13.73 point total in a final that saw all four surfers emerge from the junior ranks.
The tables turned on the 15 minute mark, when the teen surpassed fellow Bay of Plenty surfer Callum Chuter, who had opted to surf a bank to the south to extended a healthy lead over his competitors.
Callum ended up with a 12.87 point heat total, finishing runner-up ahead of Raglan's Taylor Hutchison in third and Christchurch's Harrison Whiteside in fourth.
Ella followed a similar path to Kehu, taking a while to warm up in the final of the Pen Women's Division before taking the lead in the latter half of the heat.
She finished with a 14.0 point heat total to defeat runner-up Bianca Sansom (Auckland) on 11.93 points. Britt Kindred placed third in the final ahead of first-time finalist Billie Scott (Whangarei) in fourth.
The Under-20 Boys' Final produced an identical result to the Open Men's Final, with Kehu this time posting a 15.67 point heat total to Callum's 12.87 points, Taylor finishing in third and Harrison in fourth.
In the Under-20 Women's Division it was Elia who bested Bianca, who again finished runner-up ahead of young Kai Woolf from Gisborne in third and Piha's Claudia Fraser in fourth.
