Celebration time for Bay music

It's celebration time for the next wave of up-and-coming musicians who are coming out to play in Mount Maunganui next week.

An epic night of original music created by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Music Production and Performance students is taking place at the newly branded Totara St venue tomorrow night.

The Creative Concert is an all-ages, five hour bonanza of hip hop, rock, jazz, metal, reggae, soul and more – all for a measly gold coin donation.

Programme co-ordinator David Bisop says the 53 musos making up the 13 acts performing on the night are students of the Tioriori (Certificate in Music) and Te Kamakama (Diploma in Music) courses.

'This concert celebrates the musicianship, song-writing, performance and production skills achieved by all students throughout the year,” he explains.

'For some it's the end of the year, while for others it is the end of their studies, so it's time to celebrate not only their hard work but their remarkable talents too.”

On the night four-piece hip hop crew The Sages, who are students of Te Kamakama course, will also be releasing their debut EP titled 87765.

The Sages are Joe Hayden, Glen Kranenburg, Shaayd Taikato and Paaka Davis who is also a member of Auckland outfit B2KDA (a.k.a Batucada Sound Machine).

'The Sages have been toiling and working really hard on their EP, it's a heady mix of conscious lyrics and dance influenced beats.”

They'll be joined on stage by seven-piece rock group Piccolo and Guests, featuring a number of notable local musicians and is led by Te Kamakama student Peter Ormsby.

Also taking to the stage will be five-piece reggae and soul band Jurn-e, whose members are originally from Gisborne and also features a number notable local musicians.

This is just a handful of the talented musicians set to perform so get in amongst it, head down to Totara St in Mount Maunganui and support original Bay of Plenty music tomorrow night.
