Fighters from around the Bay will go head to head on Mortal Combat next weekend.
This year's Mortal Combat Kickboxing Fight Night on Saturday, November 7, will feature a record amount of local talent, so much so that every single contest on the 20 bout fight-card will feature a local fighter.
Fighters will be competing Whakatane War Memorial Sports Stadium.
'Between the six local clubs and the many clubs from Gisborne, Rotorua, Tauranga, Rotorua and Tokoroa, we simply don't have the room to accommodate competitors from further afield,” says tournament spokesman, Carl Cowley.
'We've also had to decline entries from the touring Tahitian National Kickboxing team due to having an absolutely chocka fight card.”
Being one of the country's largest and longest running tournaments and with a long history of hosting national titles and competitors from Queenstown, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington, Napier, Hastings, Palmerston Nth, New Plymouth, Hamilton, Auckland, Whangarei, Melbourne and Sydney, with the exception of the two Tokoroa clubs, this year's annual event will be more of a Bay of Plenty championship tournament rather than the usual national fixture.
Tickets are door sales only at $20 for adults and secondary students, $5 for children and under 5's are free.
A cash bar and hot food will be available and the liquor licence requires all under 18's to be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.
The doors will open at 5pm with the first fight at 5.30pm and the tournament is expected to finish around 10.30pm.
