Ukuleles of mass enjoyment

Electric ukuleles, three-part harmonies, solid songwriting and having a laugh – these are the weapons of choice for New Zealand's ‘original ukulele trio' The Nukes.

This Friday they're heading to Tauranga to hold a music workshop with three local schools before they take to the Mauao Performing Arts Centre stage later that evening.

The Nukes, featuring Dave ‘Fingers of Fire' Parker, Ben ‘Country Boy' Collier and Dave ‘Snapper' Thiele, are more than your average ukulele band.

Snapper describes The Nukes' sound as alt-folk, with songs steeped in the band's love for Aotearoa, lush harmonies, massive sounds with tiny instruments and 'having a laugh”.

The Nukes kick off their fun Friday with a workshop at Pahoia School, which will also be attended by students and parents from Matahui and Whakamarama schools.

Then for their first time ever, they'll take to the stage down at Mauao, with Snapper adding that entry will be free for children 13 years and under who are accompanied by a paying adult.

The Nukes play Mauao PAC on Friday, October 23, from 7.30pm. Tickets cost $15 online via Eventfinda or $20 on the door. Entry is free for U13's with a paying adult. For more information visit: www.thenukes.co.nz
