The Bay of Plenty Steamers' season has come to an end thanks to Hawke's Bay firs-five Ihaia West.
West piled on an impressive 23 points to lead his side to a 33-26 win over the Bay in their ITM Cup Championship semi-final at McLean Park Napier yesterday.
The first-five kicked four penalties and three conversions and scored a crucial try. However it wasn't all one-way traffic with a first half hattrick of tries to Steamers flanker Johan Bardoul had the visitors ahead at 18-13 going into the break.
But the Magpies regained the lead shortly after the break when Magpies captain Brendon O'Connor from a lineout drive which West converted.
Dan Hollinshead kept the Bay win touch with a penalty but two penalties from West had the hosts ahead 33-21.
The steamers made a late comeback with a nice try in the 76th minute but it was too little too late.
Scorers:
Bay of Plenty 26 (Johan Bardoul 3, Te Rangi Fraser tries; Nick Evemy, Dan Hollinshead pens)
Hawke's Bay 33 (Richard Buckman, Brendon O'Connor, Ihaia West tries; West 4 pns, 3 cons). Halftime: 18-13.
