Consistency key for Bay

Bay of Plenty Steamers found the discipline to beat Northland, but they now need to find the consistency to get register back-to-back wins when they take on Wellington at ASB Bay Park Stadium on Sunday.

The Clayton McMillan-coached side showed in their last outing that they have the discipline to stick to their game plan after out-muscling Northland 37-5 last week.

But today is a different story, with Wellington are riding high after a solid 21-16 win over Waikato in Hamilton in round seven of the ITM Cup.

The visitors sit three points ahead of the Bay of Plenty in the Championship division with 21 points, compared with the home side's 19. With two rounds remaining, the Bay can secure a home semi-final spot in Rotorua for the play-offs if they win both games.

Both sides have relatively easy last rounds with Wellington playing bottom of the Premier table Manawatu, while the Bay take on Otago in Dunedin.

Bonus points could play a factor come the end of the season. Wellington have managed to pick up five bonus points compared with the Bay's three.

However, the Bay will focus on trying to get past Wellington, who have shown they are not intimidated by playing away from home.

The Bay will be without Culum Retallick, who still has a week to go on the suspension he received during their Hawke's Bay clash.

The team showed last week they have the depth and can knuckle down – although they can't afford to give too much lip to the referee as was the case against Northland.

Too often they were guilty of answering back and found themselves paying with silly penalties.

Kick off for the match is 4.35pm and the clash is live on Sky.
