Omanu Golf Club coach Jim Cusdin has handed in an impressive card of five under 65 to lead the Carrus Open after the first round in Tauranga today.

Cusdin started the back nine with an early birdie and eagle, only then to give back two bogeys soon after. Cusdin kicked into gear on the front side of Tauranga Golf Club recording four birdies to finish very strong.

Jim Cusdin in action today.

'I was obviously pleased with my start on the back nine after a birdie on ‘The Knoll' followed by a chip in on the par five for eagle, so all was well until a couple of soft bogies. 'I'm happy with the number I set as the greens are firm which is its only defence being such a short course.”

Amateur Joshua Munn showed at the end of the last Charles Tour season he can compete with the professionals and today showed nothing has changed.

Munn, who is New Zealand's number one amateur on the order of merit, was part of the afternoon feature group and carded a four under 66 to sit in a tie for second. The Palmy boy wasn't mucking around making six birdies in the first eight holes, sadly with a bogey to boot. Munn then went on to finish his round with eight straight pars.

Joining Munn was Victor Janin who came out early to shoot four under also with six birdies and a frustrating double, along with Jared Pender who was consistent, yet missed opportunities on an easy stretch of holes. Amateurs Ryan Chisnall and Nick Coxon justified their high national ranking, both carding solid three under par rounds.

There were some colourful scorecards in the Women's division as Rose Zheng and Ela Grimwood hold a share of the lead at two under par.

They showed flair with five and six birdies respectively, but couldn't minimize the error rate throughout the day. However in the opening round of the Jennian Homes Charles Tour season, it is a pleasing score all the same.

We were also treated to an historic moment on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour witnessing two players recording an ace in the same day. Both women achieving this on the same hole that is ‘The Knoll', Fai Tongdethsri and Jill Morgan managed to drain it from 130 metres.

Play will commence once again at 7:15am tomorrow and if we see similar weather as today, the scores may be lower and the crowds bigger.
