Taking Tauranga's actors to the world

When it comes to creative talent, Tauranga is spoiled for choice, and now the city's first actors' agency wants to show that talent off to the world.

Launched in August, Bay of Plenty Actors was founded by Tanya Horo – a celebrated artist with over 15 years' experience performing nationally and internationally as an actor, singer and writer.

Many of you will remember Tanya from her recurring role as Miss Lucy in a series of high-profile narrative commercials for House of Travel.

She's also appeared on Shortland Street and Jackson's Wharf, and more recently, had a lead role in the feature film The Z Nail Gang, which was filmed in the Bay of Plenty last year.

'I've been so impressed with the acting talent here in Tauranga and am passionate about using my networks to connect people to exciting jobs,” she says.

'I also want to maximise the role technology can play in allowing actors to be seen by agents without geographical limitation.”

Local talent includes actors with impressive domestic and international TV commercial experience, short and feature film experience, actors that speak several languages, stunt doubles and presenters.

Tanya says they've already approached several casting agencies whose reactions has been very positive and supportive as it exposes them to new up and coming talent.

Remote auditions are common within the industry around the world and Bay of Plenty Actors will utilise this casting medium where appropriate for the placements in film and TV.

'These auditions involve filming the actors in Tauranga and sending the clip to the casting agency outside of the region,” Tanya explains, 'ensuring the distance doesn't interfere with selecting the best person for the role.

'Tauranga actors will also travel for auditions when appropriate.”

Having worked in the creative industries of New Zealand, Australia and the United States, Tanya says she's gained a solid understanding of how the entertainment business works.

And not many agents are also actors, so she is also able to bring a different perspective into the industry and one that actors will appreciate.

'I'm committed to sharing my knowledge, skills, experience and nurturing local talent to achieve success in New Zealand and internationally,” she says.

'Our mission is to help our actors chart their own unique path, to develop their craft and achieve their full individual potential.”
