Plenty of depth for Bay golf

Bay of Plenty Golf chief executive Chris McAlpine says the region's depth of outstanding golfers has meant the sporting body is a 'victim” of their own success.

In the last 10 years, Bay of Plenty's interprovincial side has had 12 golfers move on to the pro ranks or higher honours in golfing.

'We are victims of our own success,” admits Chris. 'We've had so many outstanding young ones come through and because they've done pretty well, they've now gone on to try their luck in the professional fields.

'Nine players in the pro-field have represented the Bay of Plenty in the last 10 years as amateurs and they've gone on to be professionals.

'Plus there is Danny (Lee) who is doing so well and three players who are on the US college tour. That's 12 players gone, yet we're still able to field competitive teams.”

Chris says while it has meant the team has often seen a high-turnover of players, it also showed Bay of Plenty Golf has a lot of depth in its ranks.

'We've had pretty good structures in place for our coaching and good coaches,” he adds. 'To be quite honest, it's a culture. I think we had never won anything up until 2002 and never won an interprovincial. Yet we've won nine of the last 13.”

He says the culture has been passed down through the ranks from year-to-year.

'When we had our first win in 2002, that was the start of the culture and it's gotten stronger,” he says. 'So for the new players that have come in each time, that has got across to them.”

Danny's success on the international stage has also helped lift the team's performance, he says.

'It just shows how much work is needed to be successful,” says Chris. 'Peter Lee has probably been our second best as far as work ethic goes.”

Chris says he is feeling confident the Bay of Plenty will be strong for this year's interprovincial.

'We've got two outstanding young ones coming through at the moment,” he says.

'Harry Hillier from Te Puke and Henry Spring from Whakatane. This year they are the two new ones that will certainly add something to the main team. The others will be experienced players who we will still be relying on.”

This year's Toro Men's Interprovincial Tournament will be held at Invergargill Golf Club from December 1-5. The Toro Women's Interprovincial Tournament will be held at Ashburton Golf Club from December 8-12.

In other news, Danny has officially made the 2015 President's Cup team to play the United States in early October.

Danny had to finish in the top 42 at the Deutsche Bank Championship. It wasn't a comfortable ride for the Bay of Plenty golfer as he produced a round littered with inconsistency.

Starting the day in the top 10, he dropped 27 places after shooting an out of character six over par.

Danny joins a prestigious and small group of New Zealand players to play the President's Cup. Frank Nobilo made three appearances back in 1994, 96 and 98, Greg Turner turned out in 1998 and Michael Campbell in 2000 and 2005.

The President's Cup team for 2015, captaind by Nick Price, is: Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen, Adam Scott, Hdeki Matsuyama, Branden Grace, Marc Leishman, Anirban Lahiri, Charl Schwartzel, Thongchai Jaidee and Danny Lee.
