Greerton Mainstreet manager Graeme Morrissey is gone without working out a month's notice having earlier tendered his resignation.
Graeme Morrissey is not serving out his notice period as Greerton Mainstreet Manager. His employer, the Greerton Village Association, is paying him out instead.
On Thursday night, the Greerton Village Association decided to pay him out and told him to finish.
The committee changed hands in October with six or seven new members and a new chairman.
Committee chairman Ray Dean has no comment to make, saying it is an employment matter.
Graeme says he doubts the committee understands the role of Mainstreet as an organisation.
'The reason I resigned was that the current committee have vetoed nearly everything that was agreed for by the previous committee, and have put in nothing concrete for the last near five months,” says Graeme.
'It's a real sad day for me to be finishing off. We have had so much support, but you have got this committee on there that are not working, or don't understand what Mainstreet is about. It's a community matter basically.”
The job will have to be filled because retailers are paying a targeted rate to Tauranga City Council to pay a manager's salary, says Graeme.
The previous village association chairman David Mansel says Greerton businesses have been left in limbo by the new committee.
'We don't know what's happening,” says David.
'We don't know what promotions are in store. We haven't been informed of any changes of what's going to be happening.
'We just hear rumours about this, that, and the other.
'I approached the chairman and he said they do have promotions in the pipeline, but I haven't seen anything on paper, it's only hearsay.
'I would say the majority of retailers are disgruntled with the way Graeme's been treated.
'If the committee are not giving him any directives, they can't really have a go at him. That's the way I see it.
'We gave Graeme jobs and he did them, but if he's not being given jobs, he's got nothing to do. I think that's what was happening.”
A similar thing happened about four or five years ago, says David.
A large proportion of Greerton Village Association members became unhappy about the committee and called an extraordinary general meeting and elected a new one.
'It's possible something like that might need to be done again,” says David.
'In a small place like Greerton, half the Greerton retailers have served on the committee and they don't want to go back on again.
'So you get the others who come along and they get on; they have their own agendas, but they don't know any history.
'It's a bit of a shame. But in saying that I was on the committee five years and the committee members know that.
'If they were going to veto anything they could have asked me, ‘What's the history of this particular promotion.' But I wasn't asked.”

If the committee are ineffective, get rid of them....Get some old Greerton/Tauranga identities that you know have the good of the village at heart and who have the gumption to get things done.
New committee

Its blindingly obvious that the new committee don't know what they are doing. Retailers, you all need to get together and vote them out. Out of all the retailers, landlords and business owners in Greerton you must have a number of people who have the good of the community there at heart. People who want to see a place like that go ahead rather than "to be in a position of power" are the people you need in that committee.
Maintenance of bureaucracy.

"...The job will have to be filled because retailers are paying a targeted rate to Tauranga City Council to pay a manager's salary, says Graeme.... What? Come again. Just because there have been funds appropriated from the retailers should not automatically mean to spend it on staff. Put a tender out, get a PR firm involved, put your own ideas into it and put the funds into action instead of "the job will have to be filled".

There has been so much more involved in developing Greerton from what it was four years ago, to what it is today. Greerton is now a community, not just a shopping centre. It is a place where the elderly can feel save when walking down the street. A place where people know that their concerns can be heard as well as a place where new business have been able to prosper. This has been achieved by the efforts of the previous committee and Graeme Morrissey working in a positve manner. I doubt if a PR company could achieve the intimacy that is unique to Greerton.
Mainstreets at Risk

The Mainstreet organisations are at risk of being made redundant, and it's possible that forces with TCC take advantage of this situation to further their own control agenda. Perhaps the present committee is party to that 'not so hidden' agenda?

First of all, Mr Morissey resigned, he wasn't pushed out. Secondly, he did resign because for the first time in years, he was held accountable for his decisions. Mr Morissey is employed by the committee and the retailers. The retailers pay his wages, the committee is supposed to give him direction, which is what the new committee has done and something that Mr Morissey obviously didn't appreciate. He was left to his own devices for years and aside from walking around the village with an orange jacket on, I didn't see him work very much. I have been a resident of Greerton for 10 years and I have found every single promotion to be half done, half promoted and most of them unsuccessful. Some of Mr Morissey's ideas, such as the the Cherry Blossom Festival weren't promoted properly and aside from telling the retailers to dress their windows in pink, he wasn't doing anything to promote it as a Festival. There was in fact nothing "festivalesque" about this non event. People outside of Greerton cared little (if at all) about the window displays and it's not with pink balloons that we're going to get people interested in Greerton. The Cherry Blossom Ball was cancelled due to lack of interest. Organising a Country and Western event while the rest of the town is celebrating the Jazz Festival was to say the least, ridiculous. Things have moved ahead in the last five months, since the new committee took over. Retailers will be advised in due course about what will be happening this year in the village, and be sure that things will happen. To answer the person writing under the name "tmc" I can't see how it's obvious to that person that the committee doesn't know what they are doing. I am a member of the new committee, I am a Greerton local, like most of the people on board and it is because we have Greerton's interest at heart that we are doing the job. We do want to see the place go ahead and instead of putting pink balloons up, we are working hard on preparing Greerton for the future. However, correcting mistakes from the past and readjusting a mismanaged budget takes time. If "tmc" is so wise, why doesn't he or she come on the committe and share his or her words of wisdom with us? Or talk to Mr Dean about their ideas. Greerton is getting left behind because of its image as an old person's community. It's time to change all this and put some life into the village. It's all happening. Patience is a virtue.
More than just windows

I'm not a retailer or a landlord in Greerton, but I do shop on Greerton and I can take a wild guess at which window you stare out of every day, Maynard...one that certainly doesn't get into the spirit of things to make the village look fun and a great place to shop. Are you saying that all those retailers who do get into the spirit of the promotion shouldn't bother? They don't care about having a fun environment in which they work? I really don't think they are all as dreary as that. I would hazard a guess that you have never made the effort to decorate your window? You mention none of the hard work that paid off for Greerton that was initiated by Mr Morrissey, for instance the security cameras that he worked hard on to get funding for, the graffiti wars a few years back... you don't see much graffiti these days in the retailing sector, because of his efforts. You have a JP at the hall for your use once a week, due to Mr Morrissey's efforts. The Carboot sale once a month was set up by Mr Morrissey and once it was a viable profit maker, he offered it to a community group to run, which have now taken him up on his offer and will raise funds that will go back into keeping us safe on the streets of Greerton. If you opened your eyes to who is actually in your community you'd notice that there are two primary schools in Greerton and another very close by in Gate Pa. That tells me that there is a fair few families in the area. Communities are made up of people of all ages and cultures in every community, which includes the elderly. I see as many older persons shopping at Bayfair as I do in Greerton so not sure where you get your idea on it becoming a retirement village. You say you didn't see Mr Morrissey working that much, did you ever visit him in his office? I will watch with abated breath as to whether this committee gets around to doing 'anything” I look forward to the next community ‘event' in Greerton - hopefully this year.
Maynard why so nasty

Maynard why so nasty if you had been an active retailer in Greerton you would know how helpful Graeme has been - where is the bitterness coming from? what sort of committee member are you? buying a muffin & take away coffee into another cafe for a committee meeting - that would be like going into a salon and taking your own therapist with you - VERY bad style. OMG what is going to happen to Greerton now with this new commitee - Greerton has never had an old peoples image it is probably one of the only villages that isn't superficial - it is what it is! The festival Graeme organised was a big hit with the people ( even folk from out of town came!- so naive you are) and the cherry blossom week is always are hit every one trying to outdoor themselves -you don't think you are at the wrong end of the street maybe. You could always rely on Graeme - this new committee has left all the retailers out on a limb the mood is very low and yet they profess to have done so much over the last 5 months? the wedding expo - you can do that online - wow that will bring the people to the village - good move. Wake up swallow your pride al of you must resign - a committee whose main occupation is having meetings meetings meetings is not for our little village - let us keep our OLD PEOPLES IMAGE - at least it works for us
