Tauranga's coastguards swapped rough seas and rescues for fairways and greens today for a charity golf tournament.
More than 120 golfers took part in the Tauranga Senior Golfing Group Charity Day at Tauranga Golf Club. Sponsored by SunMedia, the event was aimed at raising money for the Tauranga Coastguard.

A spokesman for the event says the day was a resounding success.
'We have a lot of people taking part and they're having a lot of fun,” they said.
'It's not the warmest day, but that's the way it is.
'The Tauranga Senior Golfing Group have a charity day every year and when they came around looking to get involved in this year's event, myself as a member of that committee asked SunMedia if they could they get involved, and they generously did.”
The spokesperson says raising money for the Tauranga Coastguard is a worthwhile cause and some of the competitors taking part in the event had put their skills to good use.

Simon Barker lets fly from the tee.
'We've had to go on a search and rescue mission because one of them lost their golf ball,” they joked, 'so they're out here working. Their skills have come in handy today.”
And they also had a kind word for their sponsor, who got behind the event from the word go, as well as the course itself.
'I guess it reinforces that SunMedia is locally owned, locally operated and they care about the community,” they said.
'All the money raised today will go to the Coastguard and it's great to see Tauranga Golf Club get behind this worthwhile event by letting us use their facilities.”

Coastguard quietly get on with their job, their vocation, adding value to my boating (adding a helliva lot of comfort) and saving lives, distressed people ... and they are one of the very few that chose not hit on the ratepayer during my time as a Councillor! I've long favoured a boat launching and trailer parking fee being in place (All it needs is a pay and display machine, not hard) to enhance facilities, to remove the burden off ratepayers, BUT also to see a portion go to the Coastguard.
Partly agree with Murray Guy

While Murray advocates a boat launching and parking fee he will still need to be fair and equitable and not show just a ping the boaties mindset. That means other sports and hobbies could also be fair game for his fees and charges. I guess it costs to maintain other facilities as well as boat ramps. What will be next? Parking fees to help pay for sports grounds and parks perhaps? It's important for would be politicians to be consistent.
Great Support - thanks!

Our thanks to Sun Media and Tauranga Senior Golfing Group from Tauranga Golf Course for supporting our cause; we are not funded by the Government and rely on our membership and fundraising to ensure we keep our boating public safe. It was a great afternoon and we appreciate the support. We are also organising our own Charity Fundraising Golf Event on Friday 13th November at Omanu so if you are interested get in touch.

did you wake up one morning with a lemon in your mouth?, or is it you born sour?, attack Murray on some other story, not cast your negativity on a brilliant day, and many thanks for a great fundraising event for a charity that does not get much support, so we'll done SunMedia!!!!
