A Coromandel man was lucky to escape without major injury after crashing his car onto rocks near Thames, firefighters say.
Emergency services were called to help the young man who managed to get himself out of the sedan following the crash at 5am on Wednesday.

When two fire crews from Thames arrived he was being treated by ambulance staff, Thames Senior Station Officer Shane Bromley said.
"He was very lucky he wasn't injured. I think he was a bit upset by the whole thing."
The man had been travelling along the Thames Coast Rd about 4km north of the township when he crashed.
Bromley said the car went over a three metre drop onto the beach at Whakatete.
"The car was sitting on the rocks below. I think they got a tow truck in to remove it."
The man was taken to Thames Hospital by ambulance in a moderate condition.
"We have quite a few crashes on that coast road and it is a good reminder for people to drive to the conditions. We have had plenty of rain here in the last few days and people need to take care."
