Celebrate in Mercury Bay on Saturday

Celebrate Mercury Bay's talented performance artists of all ages and genres at the Bay's Best showcase this Saturday night at Whitianga Town Hall.

Bands, soloists, dance and poetry, this is the second time ever the showcase has taken place and organisers would love to see more than the 150 people crowd that showed up in 2013.

Creative Mercury Bay expects the 2015 line up to be equally entertaining, saying the first half features 12 auditioned performances by local artists, aged 7 to 70, who'll blow your socks off.

A handful of treasures on show are little tap dancers, big hip-hop dancers from Lisa Gifford Dance Studio, and The Coroglen School Ukulele Group – which is basically half the school.

Mercury Bay Area School Year 9 student Gemma Louden and friends will be presenting her original composition which has muchly impressed the judges.

Plus there's the wonderful Link Road, Mercury Bay Community Choir, MBAS soloists and bands, and much more.

Once the interval is over the stage will be set for an exciting collaboration between the Mercury Bay Big Band and guest artists The Burtones - 13 fabulous young men and women who are Auckland's King's College Jazz Band.

can't wait to push back the chairs, kick off their shoes and do some seriously fun dancing to what they're promising is going to be 'a great big wonderful sound from The Big Band and The Burtones.”

'The Burtones performed at CMB's launch 18 months ago, and are back by invitation because they are very, very good.”

The young jazz band is also hard at work while they're down here. The band and their manager Gary Burton are workshopping with MBAS music students today, with Mercury Bay Big Band members on hand to help out.

CMB describes it as 'a wonderful opportunity for our community's young musicians to learn from talented peers.”

'The Burtones are also booked in to play on tonight night at the Mercury Bay Club, from 7.45pm, so if you can't make it to The Bay's Best, get along to the Club and top up your winter-depleted feel-good hormones.”

They'll then play again on Sunday morning at 11am down at The Lost Spring before a van-full of exhausted young people head back to Auckland that afternoon.

'The Bay's Best: come and celebrate local talent and enjoy a great night out.”
