Greerton coordinator resigns

Greerton Mainstreet coordinator Graeme Morrissey is resigning. He completes working out his notice on February 18.

As he's still an employee of the Greerton Mainstreet Committee, Graeme referred all comment to Greerton Mainstreet Committee Chairman Ray Dean.

Graeme Morrissey has given his notice.

'We haven't accepted it as yet,” says Ray.

'We were going to have a committee meeting Thursday night and decide what to do about it, so I don't think its cut and dried.

'That's where it is at the moment, we've still got to have a meeting at this point in time, to see whether we may be able to change his mind.

'After Thursday night we might have a bit more information.”

Helen Barnard at Helen Barnard Property Management believes there is conflict between Graeme and the committee.

'I'm of the understanding that there's been a bit of a conflict,” says Helen.

'All I know as someone who has a business in Greerton, is he's such a plus for our little community.

'He makes us cohesive, he's high profile, he's accessible and he's managed to put the community-feel back into Greerton, and I think he's going to be a real loss to the people in the area.

Helen sees Graeme three or four times a week, talking to shop owners and retailers.

'He seems to have a very positive relationship with most people.”

Greertons the loser

I hope the new committee are going to listen to the rest of the retailers in Greerton and work together not against each other. Graeme would be the best mainstreet manager for many many years and has done an outstanding job of keeping the village looking great and encouraging everyone to work together. The promotions Graeme has initiated have been of great community benefit. One example would be the car boot sale in which he has run in his own time and helped it to succeed and then hands it over to be run by a community group to ensure the money spend goes back to where it belongs, the community. Well done Graeme, this loss won't really hit home until you've gone. I hope you enjoy your next venture.

I hope the Greerton Mainstreet committee does everything they can to change Graeme's mind. All the best Graeme, with any future endeavours.

I hope they do sort this out and act according to what is best for the community... Get over any PERSONAL issues. A couple of friends and mine spent over 4 hours just wandering around the Greerton shops and having lunch yesterday and then we didnt even have time to cross the road to the cameron Road west side.... I was absolutely gutted to see that the Greerton Sewing Centre is closing. I was born in Tauranga and its been there I think the lady said for 43 years... I live in Welcome Bay and use Greerton heaps. Hate going to town..(parking) Love the community atmosphere.... So remember do whats best for the Community.

Good riddance. Let's bring some young blood to Greerton. Someone who looks to the future, with plenty of enthusiasm and above all, a vision for what the village could and should be. Mr Morrissey was old hat and tired and aside from hanging a few deflated balloons for the so called Blossom festival (what festival??) and a car boot sale, the village has remained locked in the 80s. I look forward to seeing what the new guy will bring the village.
