Foodbank serving up laughs next week

Despite what the popular expression says, revenge is actually a dish best served up with ample lashings of humour, wit and community spirit.

If you're after an evening of hilarity, music and good food then make sure you grab a ticket for ‘The Waiters' Revenge' which takes place at the Coromandel Area School on Saturday, August 8.

The purpose of the event is to fundraise for the foodbank which is operated by the Coromandel Budget Advisory Service on Reid Road. Tickets cost $50 with all profits going to the foodbank.

It is the brainchild of the advisory service's Caro Reid and foodbank coordinator Leigh Harding, who both work as waitresses when they're not serving the community.

'Everyone has those moments where you'd just love to speak your mind to a customer,” says Leigh before adding a laugh. 'Last summer Caro and I were waiting tables and had one of those very moments.

'But there was a customer that evening who turned it into a bit of a joke, and said we should do a fundraiser where the waiters provided cheeky service and all that, which we thought was brilliant.”

The Waiters' Revenge will be a fun 'take the mickey” sort of evening that will feature light-hearted skits, moments of randomness, games, dancing and music provided DJ Dougal.

Along with plenty of entertainment, people turning up on the night will also be treated to a two-course meal plus a complimentary drink.

While laughter is guaranteed to abound, there's also a serious message driving the event – the foodbank needs the community's help after a very busy year.

'And it's getting busier all the time,” adds Leigh. 'Our number are almost double than what they were for 2014, so we want to maintain a high level of service for our community.

'Each year we do around 300 parcels, and that was up by about 100 parcels on the year ending June 2015.”

Leigh personally thinks that demand is on the increase generally because the cost of living is going up, but at the same time wages were staying the same.

This in turn means people can find it hard to budget around unexpected circumstances, such as cars breaking down or family members becoming sick.

'There have been instances where people have had to travel to Hamilton five times in the last month for hospital visits, but petrol's expensive, so they need help with groceries.”

Along with sharing laughs with the friends and newer friends, plus raising much needed funds for the foodbank, Leigh says the event will also be a 'celebration of the Coromandel's community spirit”.

'The Coromandel community is really awesome at supporting these types of events and they've been great to the Foodbank in the past. We're really looking forward to the event, it's going to be a very fun night.”

The Coromandel Foodbank presents ‘The Waiters' Revenge' at the Coromandel Area School Hall on Saturday, August 8, from 6pm. Tickets cost $50 and can be purchased from the Coromandel Town i-Site.
