Rugby finals fever for Mercury Bay

The Mercury Bay Rugby Club is brimming with confidence leading up to the Thames Valley Premier Division final taking place this weekend.

For the second time ever in the club's history its premier team have made the finals and they'll be taking on Waihou at Boyd Park in Te Aroha this Saturday, with kick off at 2pm.

Mercury Bay coach Dwayne Mansell says there's a lot of excitement amongst the boys ahead of this weekend's final.

'We're feeling pretty good and the boys are keeping themselves pretty grounded,” says Dwayne. 'The team wanted to be here right back at the start of the year and everyone has worked hard to make it to the finals.

'I think once we hit the quarter finals and won our match that was when we realised that we could go all the way.”

The team were met with torrential rain as they travelled over to Te Aroha for their semi-final match against Te Aroha's Cobras last Saturday.

While conditions weren't favourable, thankfully by kick off the clouds had parted and it was all blue skies for the 'hotly-contested” semi-final which Mercury Bay won 13-7.

'It was a pretty close match, we were down 7-10 at halftime and went through to a 13-7 win,” says Dwayne. 'It was well fought match, two evenly matched teams, but we just happen to take our chances.”

Dwayne was previously the captain of Mercury Bay's premier team and took up the role of head coach this year.

He credits improved fitness as one of the keys to the team's success, saying his players have done the hard yards and it has paid dividends.

For the final this Saturday their opponents Waihou will unofficially claim home advantage, but Dwayne believes his men are up to the tasks at hand – that being brining the Jordan Cup to Mercury Bay.

He also knows that wherever the team goes an army of supporters follows and Dwayne would like to thank everyone who's showed up to their matches so far this year.

'I think we had about 300 supporters at our semi-final last week and that was amazing. I just want to say a big thank you to them for everything this year. I know they'll be out in force this Saturday.”
