Rangiuru won an absolute nail-biting Division One semi-final against Eastern Bay Representatives Poroporo at Centennial Park. Poroporo, with a strong Fijian contingent, made the early running and led 11-6 at the half time break courtesy of a try and two penalty goals. Rangiuru sharp shooter Ngatai Kingi kept the home side in touch with two penalties.
In what turned out to be a game of attrition, the Rangiuru forward pack dug deep and negated the Eastern Bay side's attempts to add further points. With the clock ticking down Rangiuru trailed by two points before Ngatai Kingi stepped up and claimed his fourth penalty goal of the match, with just a minute remaining in the game.
The 12-11 Rangiuru victory was built upon an outstanding performance from the forwards and club pride and passion that dates back more than 100 years. Ngatai Kingi was selected as his team's player of the day for his unwavering calmness under pressure, with his shots at goal.
Arataki came from fourth place in the Division One qualifying competition to upset Te Teko 18-15 at Dunderdale Park in Eastern Bay of Plenty. The side from the Mount Maunganui peninsula will make the trip to Centennial Park in Te Puke next weekend to square off with Rangiuru for the right to lift aloft in victory the Baywide Division One trophy.
Murray Salt Stadium will host both the Baywide Premier and Development Finals after both Te Puke Sports teams posted victories on Saturday. The Te Puke Development side proved too strong for Greerton Marist prevailing 41-7 and will meet Tauranga Sports who beat Mount Maunganui 44-7.
The Te Puke Sports second fifteen has led the way throughout the Baywide season and will take an unbeaten record into the title decider. The Te Puke team who are coached by Scott Tamihana and Nui Thomas defeated Tauranga Sports in a 15-12 nail biter two weeks ago to take the nominal favorites mantle into next weekend's match.
However, standing in the way of a Te Puke Sports Development Baywide title are the defending champions. Coach John O'Loan will be taking a Tauranga Sports team to his seventh Baywide final and knows what it takes to annex Baywide silverware in the cauldron of finals day rugby.
Two Western Bay teams won thorough to the Division Two semi-finals next weekend after success on Saturday. Eastern Districts defeated Eastern Pirates 31-29 in a nail-biter in Rotorua while Papamoa got past Edgecumbe 25-5 at the Gordaon Spratt Reserve. Tauranga Sports advanced to the Baywide Senior Reserve semi-finals when they beat Te Teko 26-14 at the Tauranga Domain.
