Weekend feast of Baywide rugby

Expect the pressure to rise and a lift in intensity when the Baywide Club Rugby Competition kicks into overdrive this weekend.

After 11 weeks of combative action and some high-scoring affairs, sudden death semi-finals arrive with just four teams remaining in the Bayfair Baywide Premier, Premier Development and Division 1 grades.

In the Premier division, fourth-placed Whakarewarewa will pay a visit to undefeated Te Puke's Murray Salt Stadium, while Tauranga will look to beat Mount Maunganui for the second time in a week at the Tauranga Domain.

The sides are a repeat of last year where fourth-placed Mount Maunganui lifted their first title since 2006, dispatching Te Puke in the semi-final and Whakarewarewa in the final.

Te Puke Sports coach Craig Jeffries says plenty of work has been done this week after they were pushed hard by Whakatane Marist.

'Whaka are going to be a big challenge with the threats they have amongst their group,” Craig.

'They have a huge pack and have big game breakers in the backs, so we know it's a mighty challenge in front of us.

The Pirates should head into the finals stages as favourites, being the only unbeaten side in the competition after outclassing Tauranga Sports in the last fortnight.

Whakarewarewa coach Kopae Irihei says the side will take the opportunity with open arms after scraping through to the finals stage, thanks to Rangataua knocking over Rotoiti in the final round.

And he believes the side has been growing in confidence in the last couple of weeks.

'Te Puke are number one,” says Kopae 'They're a very structured side and has everything to lose. On the other hand we are an unpredictable team, have everything to gain and are fairly confident.”

The second semi-final sees a re-match between Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui, where the home side will be looking for the same result as last weekend when they triumphed 24-3.

Defending champions the Mount, on the other hand, will be looking to upset the favourites and grab a win.

Tauranga Sports coach Mike Rogers says it's a bit weird to be playing the same opposition two weeks in a row, and not something that he has experienced before as a coach.

'There won't be any real changes to our personnel or game plan this week,” admits Mike. 'That being said, what we do know is that we will have to improve our execution significantly as we weren't great last Saturday.”

Mount Maunganui coach Rodney Voullaire is aware that semi-final footy is a different beast and, just like last year, his side is in with a chance.

'Tauranga played their hand last weekend and deserved their win, but this weekend will be a different story,” says Rodney.

'We will be changing up our game plan following our performance on Saturday, and the boys will be ready for it.”

In Division One, Rangiuru are at home to Poroporo, while Arataki are away to top seeds Te Teko.

Te Teko coach Mike Pryor says the side is in revenge mode, after an early season loss to Arataki, adding extra spice to the match.

'We will be looking to carry on how we are playing,” explains Mike. 'We won't be looking to change anything. Having the home advantage is good for us and gives us a huge boost.”

Arataki coach Marty Bourke says this will be the side's biggest challenge of the season, yet it is exciting to still be in contention and have a chance to produce the best performance of the campaign.

'Travelling to Galatea last weekend gave us an indication of what the travel will be like,” says Marty.

'The key factors for winning will be to have every player adding real value and our accuracy in all parts of the game.”

The other semi-final sees Rangiuru, who have shown consistency throughout the season, up against a Poroporo side who have come into form in the later rounds.

Rangiuru coach Hika Reid is thankful to have the game played at their home ground.

'Poroporo are a strong team and will be a hard team to beat even at home,” he says. 'We will be looking to play the same game we have been all season.”

Poroporo director of rugby Waata Heathcote says despite it being finals time, the side won't be going into their shell and will play in their trademark flamboyant style.

'We have no issue being away from home,” declares Waata. 'However, we are under no illusion that Rangiuru are one of the top sides in the competition and will certainly be tough at home.

'If we prepare well mentally, I believe we are 80 per cent of the way there. We are certainly looking forward to the challenge.”
