Splash and dash at Baywave

Mount Maunganui's Baywave will be a hive of activity this weekend, with the Bay of Plenty's best and brightest swimmers vying for provincial honours.

This afternoon marks the start of Bay of Plenty Swimming's Short Course Championships where swimmers, divided into Under 12, 13 and 14 age brackets, will compete in distances spanning from 50m to 1500m across the three days.

Following on from the 2015 Greerton Winter Meet earlier this month, the championships are a precursor to next moth's New Zealand Age Group Short Course Championships in Auckland, which run from August 11-15.

This afternoon opens with the Mixed 12 and Under, and 13 and Over medley relays, along with 200m breaststroke, 50m backstroke and 800m freestyle.

On both Saturday and Sunday the action starts at 8.30am, with the second session starting at 5pm tomorrow. Sunday's afternoon schedule is yet to be advised.

Tomorrow has swimmers making a splash in the 200m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle, 100m backstroke and 200m butterfly.

There is also the 200m medley relays and 1500m freestyle for the fastest 10 qualifiers in both boys' and girls' divisions.

Sunday sees the 400m freestyle, 100m butterfly and breaststroke, 200m backstroke and 100m freestyle.

SunLive will have full coverage of the event across the weekend.
