Royal gets Maori chance

Joe Royal could be set for some inside provincial knowledge when he lines up in the pre-ITM Cup hit out between the Maori All Blacks and New Zealand Barbarians.

Royal, the Rototi and Bay of Plenty Steamers hooker, will start from the Maori All Blacks' bench tomorrow in what is his third consecutive season with the representative side.

He missed out on selection for last weekend's 27-26 victory against Fiji in Suva. At half, time, the Kiwis trailed 26-10.

The Maori side has five new caps heading into this Saturday's match; Taranaki's Sean Wainui is in the starting line-up along with Marcel Renata, Joe Edwards, Brad Weber and Codey Rei in the reserves.

Charlie Ngatai will once again captain the side from the midfield.

Maori All Blacks coach Colin Cooper is pleased with how the team had recovered from their trip to Fiji and is confident of another committed performance.

'The team showed true determination and resolve in a challenging contest in Fiji and I am sure they will take that commitment into the match against a strong Baabaas side,” says Colin.

'I would love to think we can finish our campaign on a high note and continue the team's incredible record in a rare performance on home soil.

'However, we won't take anything for granted as we are up against a very strong team.

'I am confident it will be a great encounter for the fans with a lot of stake and a number of players on both teams looking to make a case for All Blacks selection.”

The New Zealand Barbarians have also named a high-quality line-up boasting the likes of All Blacks Cory Jane and Tom Taylor and NZ U-20 halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi.

Jane, who has hopefully overcome a hamstring injury, is just one player that will be keen to impress the All Blacks' selectors.

The 32-year-old missed the Super Rugby final with the Hurricanes and will be eager to prove his fitness to the All Blacks selectors heading into the Rugby World Cup.

In the Maori All Blacks camp halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow gets a start as he continues his recovery from a horrific knee injury last year.

Kerr-Barlow and Crusaders Andy Ellis could potentially be fighting over the All Blacks third halfback spot along with Brad Weber.

Tomorrow's match is at Auckland's Eden Park from 7.35pm.
