Fraser Street works progressing well

Fraser Street at 15th Avenue will remain closed while contractors complete widening and resealing work. 15th Avenue remains open with a single lane in each direction.

Gravel is laid to milled surface to raise the level of 15th Ave.

A milling machine is working from 6.30am till 10pm each day chewing up the old pavement, some of which is to be used as fill in re-cambering the widened road at the busy intersection.

All the diversions turning traffic from Fraser Street are in place, says NZ Transport Agency regional communications advisor Philippa Ross James.

The high traffic areas of what will in future be known as State Highway 2A is being laid as a five layer sandwich in the high traffic areas.

There's a sub course, base course, a foam stabilised layer, which is expected to be completed by Sunday, followed by bitumen membrane seal and topped off with an asphalt concrete layer next week.

Milling machine removes road surface of 15th Ave.

'It's all going pretty well and the long range weather forecast is favourable,” says Philippa.

'The milling will be finished on Thursday, and the foam stabilisation which is the main surface on the new road, is happening this weekend.

'It's costing more money to do it this way, but we are doing it to minimise disruption.

Old traffic lights removed 15th.

'The aim of the closure is to get in there get it done as quickly as possible.”

The resurfacing is not the end of the project, which is expected to be completed about March.
