MBCC: songs to warm the soul

There's nothing better in this world than the warm sound of 50 voices singing in harmony on a cold winter's evening.

So warm your soul with the Mercury Bay Community Choir who are presenting its 2015 project A Winter Sing, with guest director Dr James Niblock,at the Whitianga Town Hall this Saturday.

The choir includes Mercury Bay Area School pupils, plus members from Great Barrier Island's Island Song choir, Te Aroha's Aroha Community Choir and individuals from Thames, Auckland and Colville.

Guest director James Niblock is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, USA, and this will be his third visit to Whitianga.

Organising committee member Anna Horne says they are absolutely certain this will be another outstanding choral and community experience.

'James has the ability to bring out the best in us,” says Anna. 'He has once again selected a beautiful, at times very challenging, repertoire for both the large choir and for several smaller ensembles.

Members of the choir have been practicing for several months now, with those living outside Mercury bay being coached by their local choir directors.

This week the choir has been undertaking intensive workshops with James in the lead up to the concert.

On offer this year will be Italian classics, a 17th century Peruvian processional hymn, a contemporary Eric Whittaker lullaby, an Irish American folk song, plus a 'totally crazy” Britten opera.

Anna says they are proud to be contributing to the cultural enrichment of the Coromandel while offering an evening of song that's 'bound to warm your soul”.

'We are also very keen to encourage young people to experience live music more so anyone under 18 can come to the concert free of charge!”

James made his first appearance as a guest director in 2008 for a concert that involved 55 singers of all ages and ability performing for an audience of 300 people.

Using the same successful formula, James returned in 2010 and now again in 2015.

Mercury Bay Community Choir's A Winter Sing takes place at the Whitianga Town Hall on Saturday, July 18. Doors open 6.30pm. Tickets cost $15 for Adults and entry is free for under 18's.
