Snow has seen a number of roads closed in the Eastern Bay.

The Whakatane District Council says the Special Purpose Road between Murupara and Waikaremoana is currently closed on the Wairoa side of the District Boundary.

Snow is falling in the Bay as cold fronts move up the country.

'More snow is forecast to fall on the Whakatane side of the boundary later today, with a likelihood the road section between Te Whaiti and Ruatahuna may also be closed,” says a post on the Whakatane District Council website.

'Our road maintenance contractor is standing by to perform snow clearing if required, and we'll issue updates when we have more information.”

Snow is also reported on Mt Tarawera and Rainbow Mountain, as well as in Matawai, between Opotiki and Gisborne.
