Visitors holidaying in the Western Bay of Plenty are reducing the period they stay in the region.
Management at the region's two biggest holiday parks, Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park and Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort, are reporting a decrease in the length of time visitors are staying.
People are packing up their camping gear sooner in the Western Bay of Plenty, citing work pressure as the cause for their briefer holidays. File picture.
Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort manager Rebecca Crosby says this is a trend that has emerged in the last few years.
'It's been a big trend. People are making their holidays shorter,” says Rebecca, who notes, 'Most blame it on work.”
She says the shorter stays are not having an impact on revenue.
'We have not had the massive downturn that some parks did.”
Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park manager Mark Hales says some of his regular holidaymakers are reducing their stays by more than 50 per cent.
'Some of them have told us that due to the recession they won't stay here four or five weeks, they'll only stay for two or three weeks instead.”
'That's good in a way because it allows other people to come into the park.”
He says many regular visitors are completely missing out on coming to the region because employers are being strict about when holidays are taken.
'They have not had the freedom to take the holidays when they wanted.”
He says many of the regulars have standard dates booked in, but when they discover they had to take their holidays at a different time, they are unable to re-book because the park is full.
Mark says the park has been completely full since Boxing Day.
'It's been going really well. We still have no vacancies, we're full each night.
'We do have a couple of gaps towards the end of January, but they seem to be filling up as we go along.”
