Rising Stars finalists announced

The Bay of Plenty Symphonia is pleased to announce the six talented young finalists of the 2015 Rising Stars competition.

The Symphonia received a total of 14 entries for its Concerto Competition which is a biennial event for secondary school level instrumental musicians from the Bay of Plenty.

The concert will also feature a performance of Warmth of Passion by Soomin Kim, winner of the inaugural Bay of Plenty Symphonia Composition Competition. Photo: File.

Each contestant submitted videos of their solo performances which were carefully assessed by a local jury.

Symphonia president Maggie Gething says the works to be played in the finals are mostly classics of the repertoire and will be well known to music lovers.

'The finalists will now polish their performances and begin rehearsals with Bay of Plenty Symphonia ahead of the concert at Tauranga Boys College on Friday, September 4.”

The prestigious jury for the finals will be headed by Peter Walls, ONZM, who is best known to Tauranga audiences as the conductor of Opus, and is currently deputy head of Chamber Music New Zealand and Emeritus Professor of Music at Victoria University among other positions.

The concert will also feature a performance of Warmth of Passion by Soomin Kim, winner of the inaugural Bay of Plenty Symphonia Composition Competition.
